Paul LaRosa received a message from his opera instructor the day before the first round of auditions for a young artists program he’d never heard of
“My teacher called me up and said, ‘tomorrow at 2:30 you’re singing for Lorin Maazel. Have a good time.’’’
Backstage after the dress rehearsal of the Castleton Residency for Young Artists launch, LaRosa recalls that he’d been more than willing to rearrange his schedule for the audition, upon hearing the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic’s name dropped.
“I didn’t even know this existed,” he said. “But I was there. 1 was under the impression I was being hired for a job.”
