Smith also spoke about community policing, noting that citizens of the county should be able to give information to their sheriff’s office. “Every one of our deputies should immerse themselves in the community,” she said. * As part of increasing community communications, Smith mentioned that the RCSO has wanted a “reverse 911” system for years, but mentioned that it would cost tens of thousands of dollars from county taxpayers. A reverse 911 system automatically calls residents in a cer-. tain area in case of a crisis. “It would be great to have one but it is a very expensive system.. . where will the money come from?” she asked practically.
Smith thought that the RCSO could explore obtaining grants for the system or team up with the Fire and Rescue companies to defray the costs. “Obviously, if we need an increase from the County Board of Supervisors we will have to ask for it,” she said about working with a limited budget. “A lot of times we have to do without.”
Smith said that she wouldn’t cut funding if it jeopardized a deputy’s safety, but noted that the sheriff’s office has recently depended on grants for additional equipment.
