Work should get under way in about a month on four-laning the next section of U.S. 211-522 from the edge of Washington to the Covington River bridge at Gid Brown Hollow.
Robert Moore, resident engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation, said VDOT accepted a bid of $1.99 million from L.F. Franklin and Sons of the Winchester area. He said the firm had done other work for the highway department on Interstate 66 in Fauquier County.
Mr. Moore said a groundbreaking is scheduled for the week of Nov. 18, but equipment may be moved on to the site earlier.
The contract is for 240 days, but may be extended because of bad weather. Mr. Moore said he expected the work to be completed by next summer or fall.
The highway department is scheduled to be taking bids for the next section, from the Covington River to the edge of Sperryville, next summer, with that project also expected to last about a year.
The contaminated soil at the former B&B Service Center has not yet been dealt with, Mr. Moore said. The construction firm will work around that area for a time. Mr. Moore said an area had been marked off and dirt in that area must be dug up to a depth of three feet. He said the oil firm responsible for the clean-up has not yet decided whether to treat the contaminated dirt on the site or to remove it.
Mr. Moore said the construction project will be done in a way to minimize interference with traffic on the existing road.
He said traffic will occasionally be stopped to allow construction equipment to cross the road, and traffic may be slowed where the new road is close to the present road.
