Two-term incumbent Sen, Kevin Miller, the Harrisonburg Republican who represents 26th District in the Virginia Senate, is running against a political novice who has made his record the focal point of her campaign.
“I don’t think he gives much attention to any of the geographic area he represents,” says Margaret Haynes, a Democrat and constituent aide to 5th District U.S. Rep. Jim Olin, D-Va. “I repeatedly hear in the last six or eight weeks, I’ve been (east of the Blue Ridge) more than he has in eight years.”
Asked to list specific accomplishments he has achieved for Rappahannock or Fauquier counties, Sen. Miller admitted it was “hard to recall things specific to Rappahannock and Fauquier.”
Giving it some thought, he said he helped retire some school buses and introduced legislation that limited liability for private landowners who allow public events to be held on their property.
“Since I retired from JMU (where he taught accounting), I spend much more time east of the Blue Ridge than this side,” said Sen. Miller, who said county adminstrators would be able to confirm “I have been there all the time."
