The Oct. 8th meeting of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR, was held at the new Rappahannock County Library in Washington with the Regent, Mrs. Thomas Eastham, presiding.
During the opening ceremonies, interesting facts about the U.S. flag were given by Mrs. Walter Clark. On April 4, 1818, Congress established that from then and after July 4th of that year, there would be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternating red and white, and that there would be twenty stars. When each state would be admitted to the Union after that, a star would be added on the next succeeding July 4th after its admission.
Mrs. Dale Metzinger introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Eldon Brown, the National Vice Chairman of Overseas Genealogy, whose subject was “Leaving an Impression.” With records being lost or burned and many genealogical records lost forever, she encouraged each and every one to tell something about herself and not only who the person is but also something about herself. If we don’t leave the information it just won’t be there. She read some interesting, informative and often amusing excerpts from wills from the past when persons wrote about themselves, their families, their possessions and their wishes.
