In Rappahannock County High School, as in other schools across the county and around the state, nonathletic competitors prepare for a new year.
As soccer players prepare for the goal, basketball players shoot hoops and cross-country runners stretch out before they go the distance, non-athletic competitors over-extend their brain power as they prepare for the game.
The list of non-athletic competitions has grown over the years.
Some of Rappahannock High’s earliest clubs, like Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Future Homemakers of America (FHA), have paved the road for newer clubs like the school newspaper or the Technology Students of America (TSA).
Clubs like Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) and the Effvifbnmental Club have developed from social and controversial issues that affect students and adults across the nation.
“There are many students who are in athletic events as well as non-athletic clubs,” school principal John Toth said, adding time spent in any club varies for each student and can range from a few hours a day to a few hours a week.
