Sheriff Woodward
No contest has generated more interest this election season than that between incumbent Sheriff John H. Woodward and challenger Roger Cordani, both Independents.
Unfortunately for Mr. Cordani, however, no race has generated fewer issues, either, and there is considerable support in Rappahannock for the job Sheriff Woodward has done.
We credit the sheriff with avoiding controversy (just look east to see how bad things can get) through capable management, making the jail fiscally sound, maintaining high visibility and inspiring loyalty among his deputies and other employees.
Sheriff Woodward would do well to listen to those who have complained that his office is not as responsive as it could be. Whether the complaint is valid or not, the Sheriffs Office should avoid" even the appearance that they don’t follow up on citizens’ complaints. However, we have not seen any hard evidence that this is much of a problem, and until we see such evidence we can only suggest the sheriff make an effort to change the perception. As far as a major problem, we doubt that it really is. At any rate, the perception ought to be changed, and we see some evidence that Sheriff Woodward has already taken appropriate steps.
Mr. Cordani has emphasized Operation ID, a junior deputy program and greater contact with county high school students. Those aren’t bad ideas, but they hardly constitute a good
