school and four groups in the elementary school,” she said with pride, adding the groups meet once a week on a rotating schedule so no class is missed more than once in a six-week period.
“If I had this program where I wanted it, I would work With the real young kids. I would not have 19year-olds” with drop-out possibilities or academic problems, she said with determination.
“It’s a great deal of information giving,” she said of her job requirements, adding she helps students confront teachers with problems, discovers answers to problems or helps teachers deal with students.
When the program started, students found their way to Mrs. Fox’s “warm weather office—the picnic table” through referrals from teachers or administrators. After two years of being available, students now find their way to her on their own.
“There can be a lot of sadness with this job,” she said, adding often she spends long hours on the telephone listening, helping.
