The Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company is in the midst of its annual fund drive, raising money that goes directly back into the community. When they are called upon, as sadly occurred this week, we know they will provide us with top-quality emergency service at great personal sacrifice to themselves.
The rescue squad alone answered 266 calls last year, and 112 of the patients received advanced prehospital care—nine were recorded “saves,” or patients that probably would not have survived without the intervention of trained Washington Rescue Squad volunteers.
The number of rescue calls represents a 133 percent increase since 1985. Volunteers expended more than 2,500 manhours, equivalent to 107 days and nights of a person’s life.
