Pianist-composer Peter Kater will make a guest appearance to perform songs from their collaborative recording entitled “Natives.”
Of Navajo-Ute heritage, Mr. Nakai resides in Tucson, Ariz. Since 1982 he has accumulated numerous striking flute recordings that have become known for providing listeners with the pure mellow sound of the traditional Native American wood flute that was used for courting and healing in his culture.
His music is used by those who meditate, artists who paint, psychologists searching to create a calming mood for clients and those at home to quiet the atmosphere of a hectic day.
His recordings reflect the duality of honoring cultural traditions and of developing individual expression. In his attempts to master the traditional melodies, he has found his own expressive style that has brought his instrument into the realm of ensemble performance.
Co-founder of the ethnic jazz ensemble “Jackalope,” which blends ancient and modem melodies, rhythms and instruments with hi-tech sound, Mr. Nakai has also recorded with two other musicians.
A Tiger Valley resident, Mr. Rater’s style of improvisation touches a deep, spiritual chord for many of his listeners. The two artists’ ability to be musically sensitive to the other creates an experience of tranquility. Both artists have composed for television and film, have toured extensively and have gained international acclaim in their own right.
