While some clubs compete for participation and some select members, all students in Rappahannock County High School get a chance at the Pop Quiz team.
When students from the 8th to 12th grades, fill out forms in homeroom the first few days of school, they take the test which may or may not place them in the top six positions which compete on the televised game show, “Pop Quiz.”
Roger Flinchum and French teacher Cindy Wayland have been working with the “Pop Quiz” teams for over 10 years.
“The test is about 30 general questions,” Mr. Flinchum said, adding all students are given the test.
Some take it seriously, some take it half-heartedly, and others barely answer the mutiple choice fill-in-theblank questions.
From the 350 to 400 students taking the test, the two team sponsors arrive at a team of four players with two substitutes, as game rules allow.
“In the past 10 years, we’ve had two 8th-graders on the team and one foreign exchange student,” said Mr. Flinchum, adding that “the team takes the best of the best.”
Working toward a championship, the team plays several times before their first appearance on television.
“We often play against teachers, adminstrators or adult volunteers,” he said, explaining after the team has been decided upon, the six practice their speed in getting to the buzzer and in providing quick answers.
