They call her “Mom.”
And, in many ways Susan Fox, Rappahannock County High School drop-out prevention coordinator, is like a “mom” to many students.
“I call it mothering,” Mrs. Fox described her position, a quick smile lighting up her eyes.
Four years ago, the Fox family moved to Rappahannock County from Northern Virginia.
“One thing just evolved into another,” Mrs. Fox said of her job.
A former fifth-grade teacher and mother of three, Mrs. Fox subsisted in Fauquier County for one year before filling a position funded through a grant that brought in volunteers to help with remedial math and reading programs in Rappahannock County Schools.
The next year, she was offered the part-time position as drop-out prevention coordinator.
This job brought her into contact with older students with a need.
“This part of the job I love,” she said with a smile.
Her friendly disposition, motherly attitude and trusting way has helped to make her a familiar face in the high school corridors.
Getting students to class, reminding procrastinators of deadlines, and acting as mediator of problem areas is all part of the job description.
In flight between schools, taking children to .or from school, helping students find a job, and taking students to or from the clinic are all jobs that keep Mrs. Fox quite busy.
No matter what the job, she performs it with a smile.
