Rappahannock Newt Staff W liter * When incumbent U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr. announced this summer his retirement from Congress after three terms, he set off a scramble to succeed him that won’t be resolved until the Nov. 5 general election.
Dozens of names were bantered around during the first weeks after Rep. Slaughter made his announcement, including two of his relatives: son D. French Slaughter III and first cousin Kay Slaughter, a Charlottesville City Council member.
French III lost the Republican nomination to Del. George Allen, who represents part of Albemarle County in the state legislature, but Kay Slaughter avoided a floor fight at the Democratic Convention in Culpeper to beat out two other candidates.
Del.-Allen, 39, is a Charlottesville lawyer and son of the former Washington Redskins coach of the same name. A Republican in the Democrat-dominated General Assembly, Del. Allen has sponsored
