Rappahannock, 53.1 percent of the increase was due to this natural growth and 46.9 percent due to net in-migration. In the rest of the planning district net migration accounted for most of the increase, from 76 percent in Fauquier to 70 percent in Madison.
This is not due to any unusual birth rate in Rappahannock. In fact the county’s rate of increase due to births and deaths was lower than for other counties in the area. It was due to the high rate of migration into the other counties.
Rappahannock is also the whitest county in PD-9. Ninety-two percent of Rappahannock’s 6,622 population is white, compared to 81.2 percent for Culpeper, 87.5 percent for Fauquier, 85.2 percent for Madison and 85.1 percent for Orange.
Conversely, Rappahannock has the lowest percentage of blacks, 7.4 percent, compared tb 17.2 percent
