In 1948 Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond picked up 10.4 percent of the vote in Virginia with his segregationist message. But though most of those voters were taken from Democrat Harry Truman, the incumbent president nevertheless managed to win the state by taking 47.9 percent.
No other independent candidates in the past half centry have come close to going into double digits in Virginia.
States Rights candidate T. Coleman Andrews got 6.2 percent of the vote in 1956 but Republican Dwight Eisenhower carried by the state by a landslide.
In 1980 independent John Anderson got 5.1 percent of the vote, but Ronald Reagan was the overwhelming winner.
