The following is an unsigned letter that ran in the magazine “Focus on the Family.”
The abortion issue is often cast in terms of a political or religious debate, but the following letter puts it in its proper perspective; it is a matter of life and death.
For the past 10 years, I have worked as an RN in the ICU/CCU environment. During this time, I have witnesses hundreds of deaths, and how a person’s dying heart looks on a heart monitor. However, it wasn’t until a painful personal experience that I clearly saw another issue as the life-and-death decision which it really is. After 18 months of trying, we finally conceived our second child.
We were so excited about that first obstetric visit because of the thrill of seeing that active, thriving child moving all about, and that heart beating like a rapidly flickering flashlight. After all, that was our experience with our son, Chris. But our world was about to come crashing down.
The physical exam was normal as expected, but as soon as the ultrasound unveiled a glimpse at our newest child, I knew immediately that something was terribly wrong.
