whine. “Plus, I vaulted three days before my 40th birthday, just to prove to myself I could still do it,” she said.
And Topaz? “She’s still perfect for vaulting," reports the mare’s proud master. “She’s 30 years old and still doing it. She’s the oldest vaulting horse in the country.”
It was Topaz who gave Dafna Laurie, co-owner of Mountain Springs Stable, her start in vaulting. “Topaz taught me almost as much as Chris did,” said Ms. Laurie, who placed fourth in the 1984 nationals under Mrs. Appel-Bucierka’s guidance.
Today, Topaz gives her name — and her experience — to the 4-H vaulting club from Chantilly coached by Mrs. Appel-Bucierka. These youngsters from the Topaz Vaulters will show what they’ve learned from the old mare at a demonstration that’s part of the four-hour clinic at »«Mountain Springs.
