I don’t have the answer to the problem, but the public schools obviously can’t even educate those students who come to them unhandicapped. And, my critic not withstanding, I doubt that those with real learning disabilities can be properly helped by just any volunteer with a few hours a week to devote to a “feel-good” activity.
But every student, including the handicapped, who graduates from high school should, I think, meet minimum requirements. Those who cannot, handicapped or not, should keep working until they doSocial
promotion, for whatever charitable reason, is dishonest and a disservice to the student. If that makes me insensitive, so be it.
