sponsible to the people. To vote “yes” on this issue would be in keeping with the principals of democratic government.
However, two arguments have been raised in opposition: first, an elected school board would havf-no power to raise taxes, so that it would be an empty formality to elect members whose recommendations could be easily ignored by the governing body, and second, the wrong people might be elected.
On the first point, an elected school board would have the same powers as the present appointed board. But, since the members will have been elected in their own right, they might well be more independent, more truly responsive to the wishes of their constituents.
To say this is not to be critical of the present appointed board, which has performed well over the years. But if there should arise a difference of opinion between an elected school board and the Board of Supervisors, school advocates might be encouraged to apply to their special board to advance the interests of the schools, and the governing body might be disposed to pay somewhat
