Rappahannock jumped the
gun on the double digit inflation that hit 10.1 percent nationwide in September. According to the manpower bulletin from the Culpeper office of the Virginia Employment Commission, the county’s unemployment rate reached that mark in August, a month before the country as a whole.
Rappahannock retained the dubious distinction of leading the area in jobless rate. For the month of August, Culpeper County’s unemployment figure stood at 7.5 percent, Orange’s at 9.8 percent, Madison’s at 8.1 percent and Fauquier’s at 4.4 percent.
November 1, 1982, is the deadline for applying for land use taxation to be effective in 1983. Any Rappahannock landowner interested in applying for the preferential assessment program for agricultural, horticultural, forest and open space land should contact the commissioner of revenue’s office in Washington, 675-3513, prior to November 1,1982.
The State Corporation Commission has authorized Central Telephone Co. of Virginia (Centel) to implement a $2.2 million annual rate increase in the form of a 5.70 percent surcharge on its local rates and service charges effective Oct. 1,1982.
