Spenders need
to be elected
To the Editor:
On Election Day, we’ll finally ' have the opportunity to vote to elect school board members. This referen' dum is long overdue.
Virginia is the only state in the country to have appointed boards. And, as schools, rightfully, consume a lion’s share of local revenue, it Seems only proper that those who spend our tax dollars be made politically accountable.
At present, no matter how dedicated an appointed school board • member is — and no one questions devotion to service - none has to go before the public and explain or defend views on educational philosophy, policy and fiscal planning. . School board members are responsible for developing policies that govern our children’s education. They spend our money. They should be elected.
