Open space blindsided

The Rappahannock Board of Supervisors last week launched a surprising and unexpected assault on our essential public policy commitment to protect the county’s open space heritage. <

Despite broad and strong testimony in favor of retaining the open-space category of the use-value tax system, the supervisors voted unanimously to drop it from the county’s ordinance. No one opposed the current open-space category at the well-advertised hearing on Oct. 5; the supervisors did not Challenge the points made by those who testified for keeping It, and we have heard no public opinion suggesting this change.
