depict the basic moves in vaulting; Roman cavalry men are credited with refining the sport.
Vaulting was part of the Olympics until the 1930s when tanks and trucks displaced cavalry units, and it trails just behind soccer today as the favorite sport of European youth. In this country, the first vaulting clubs were established in California 22 years ago, “and it’s been steadily gaining fans ever since,” said Mrs. Appel-Bucierka.
There’s an ongoing campaign to reinstate vaulting in the Olympics — the 1980 Games in Los Angelos included a vaulting demonstration — and the United States boasts 60 clubs, “five in Virginia alone,” the coach added.
In its own right, vaulting is a challenging sport that gives young people a chance at equestrian competition without the expense of owning and maintaining their own equines. “One horse can be used by 20 kids without the horse being overworked,” noted Mrs. Appel-Bucierka.
Competition follows the same model as unmounted gymnastics, with participants performing compulsory movements plus an original freestyle program to music. Judging is similar too, with the vaulters evaluated on degree of difficulty, elevation, composition, artistry and the like.
