On the second point, it should be observed that it is always possible in a democracy for the wrong people to be elected. To avoid such an outcome, it will be important for supporters of the schools to organize, get parents registered to vote, and take an interest in school matters.
As Thomas Jefferson said: “I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it away from them, but to inform their discretion.”
Let us heed this Virginian’s advice. On Nov. J vote “yes” for an elected school board in Rappahannock County.
