This letter is written in response to comments made by some of the members of the Board of Supervisors (they were probably joking) to the complaints of all the bear spotted around the county. While it is unfortunate that some material damage has been done to crops, I have to admit in being delighted and charmed by the bears I have seen this past summer.
I think it would be a big mistake to increase the length of the hunting season in order to cull the population of black bears. It is wrong to assume the bear population has increased just because more bears have been spotted.
It seems to me that the Board asked Jim Bankston to appear at their meeting in order to have an expert give some advice to those who do not understand game management (and a few other things). But from what I can extract from the report in the paper they decided that the expert did not give them the advice they wanted to hear. (I’m starting to feel real dumb because they probably were making a joke but I’ll continue just in case).
If the length of the bear hunting season were increased, the population of the black bear could be dangerously reduced since most of the bears would no longer be living in the National Park where they have sanctuary but in the local foothills where they don’t.
If that is true then the argument could be made that a reduction in the number of bears killed during the season would be in order.
