Millay's works endure
The Theatre at Washington, Va., will present “Edna St. Vincent Millay: A Celebration of the Artist Through Her Letters and Poetry Oct. 24-25. The Blue Heron Theatre of New York City is bringing its production here from New York.
Poet, feminist champion of social change, and exemplar of jazzage philosophy, Edna St. Vincent Millay was one of the most famous women of her time. This year marks the centennial of her birth and, unlike many of her contemporaries, her admirers are still legion. For these, and for those to whom this remarkable woman is as yet unknown, “Edna St. Vincent Millay: A Celebration of the Artist Through Her Letters and Poetry” was created.
In this fully staged performance piece, Miss Millay’s wit, humor, and insight come alive through the portraits created by three actresses, each of whom represents a different period in the poet’s career: the young girl from Maine whose poem “Renascence” made her an overnight literary sensation; the Greenwich Village poet who lived by her own motto, “My candle bums at both ends;” and the successful professional woman in whose private life of series of personal tragedies inspired some of her greatest lyrics.
Letters to family, lovers and colleagues establish chronology and illuminate her strongly autobiographical poems which, in turn, evoke her inner world.
“Edna St. Vincent Millay: A Celebration of the Artist Through Her Life and Poetry” will be presented at the Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 and 3 p.m. Oct. 25. Tickets are $10, and $8 for seniors and students. Reserved seating. For more information or to make reservations, phone 675-1253.
