At Tuesday's meeting of the Rappahannock County School Board, Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell asked the board for authorization to lobby our state delegate and senator in Richmond to sponsor legislation restricting access to abusable over the counter medications. “Where I've been superintendent previously, this has been an issue. Young people can get access very easily. It can be a real issue, and that's why I want to make it more difficult to get them off the shelf.
Numerous states have passed such legislation.
It wouldn't ban such over-thecounter cold medicines, but put them behind the counter, limiting access. The problems stemming from these medicines are two-fold.
Those with the anti-histamine pseudo-ephedrine can be used as a raw ingredient for speed. But also, kids abuse other cough medicines just as they are.
Putting them behind the counter would prevent shoplifting or obviously inappropriate purchasing of these abusable medicines.
