The directors take the delighted kids to the zoo, where they have never been and the children also discover the freedom of space at their first sight of the sea. This freedom contrasts with their regular life in the suffocating, dismal, disgusting, prison-like spaces in the brothels.
Briski attempts to break through the walls of bureaucracy, taking her kids away from the Red Light district and placing them into schools. She succeeds in getting the most artistic child to a special photography meeting in Amsterdam. For anything she tries she must obtain the children’s parents approval and often it is not granted. For acceptance by a school it also takes tests to determine that the kids are not HIV positive and on and on. One comes away from this movie with great respect for both the directors and the children and also the knowledge that what little has been accomplished points to how much needs to be done.
