This is a lovely, easy walk for a hot summer day. The walk leads through a highcanopied forest, past large boulders and an Appalachian Trail hiking shelter. It crosses several small streams and reaches the rim of a steep canyon with a great view down into Rappahannock County. A bit farther along the walk is the former site of the 1900s Mount Marshall Copper Mine.
Driving directions
To reach the walk, enter Skyline Drive at the Thornton Gap entrance station just off US 211. Drive north for 14 miles. On the right will be the paved Gravel Springs Gap parking lot, vith spaces for about 12 vehicles. Alternately, if you enter Skyline Drive at the Front Royal entrance station, drive 17.4 miles to the Gravel Springs Gap parking lot on the left.
