Mine Road.”If you had turned right onto the Bluff Trail, in about 1.5 miles you would have reached the site of the former Mt. Marshall Copper Mine. No traces of this mine exist now. The mine was a short-lived venture. It was incorporated in 1907 with John J. Miller of Washington, VA, as one of the owners; the other three owners were from Cincinnati, Ohio. A vein of copper ore was examined hy experts but was found to be too low-grade to make the mine practical and the mine was abandoned in 1908. Records in the Rappahannock County Courthouse contain the court proceedings to dissolve the company. A list of the assets of the company included such -items as a 15 horsepower boiler, 98 lbs. of dynamite, 200 lbs. manila rope, 1 claw hammer, 4 mattresses, 1 mirror, and 1 rug. The debts of the company included a handwritten note from Miss Mary Thornton listing such items as 7 lbs. hens (56 cents), 2 lbs. butter (30 cents), and 13 lbs. Ham ($2.30).
