One side of the store has been made into a coffee bar, with tables and benches, and comfortable chairs are distributed throughout the store for customers who want to sit and read but prefer a cushioned seat to wooden pew.
Located in Sperryville on Main street, the Bookshop is a regular stop for locals and tourists, some of whom make a point to stop in whenever they come to Rappahannock County.
“About 80 percent of our business are daytrippers on their way to the park or the caverns. They find our store by accident and just keep coming back.,” said Ostinato.
Ostinato bought the building and all of the stock from Gannon, and started adding some sections of her own. Old Sperryville carries a mix of new and used books on a wide, variety of subjects, although there is the same predominance of local history and regional interest books found at Fly-By-Night. Ostinato’s dedication to carrying local interest books isn't simply as a retailer, she also reprinted a popular book about Rappahannock county's past herself. My Rappahannock Story Book by Mary Elizabeth Hite is an anthology of stories about Rappahannock County collected by the author, and was originally published in 1950.
“It's not completely historically accurate, but it's clear that [Hite] absolutely loved Rappahannock county,” said Ostinato.
