In the movie “Master and Commander” there is a memorable scene in which naturalist and ship’s surgeon Dr. Maturin shows Captain Aubrey an insect that looks remarkably like a dead twig. Until it begins to move! The captain gets the idea of camouflaging his ship to sneak up on the enemy and win another great sea battle for England.
Camouflage is surprisingly common in nature and its adaptiveness is obvious. Animals that are effectively invisible to predators are more likely to escape predation.
