choose one book from of a list of classics in the vein of Melville's “Moby Dick,” and Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying” They also choose one of a selection of books related to the calculus and physics classes they take in their last year at WCDS.
This rigorous summer reading program starts at WCDS in second grade with students reading six books from a selected list of titles, including “The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses” and “The Velveteen Rabbit.” The selections increase in difficulty as students develop their reading skills. Third and fourth graders read four books from their respective selections; fifth, and sixth graders read five books on the selected reading list; and seventh and eighth graders read four books of more substance such as “Watership Down,” “Raisin in the Sun,” or Harper Lee's "lb Kill a Mockingbird.”
Ninth through eleventh grade students read from a required Ust of classics appropriate to their grade level, plus one of a selection of books or documents related to the science and history classes they will be taking the following year. Selections include non-fiction works like “Gifted Hands” or “The United States Constitution” alongside fiction greats like “Frankenstein” and “Gulliver’s Travels.”
