Gravel Spring Hut
In about 2/10ths of a mile you will reach Gravel Spring, marked by your third concrete post. About 85' to the right is Gravel Spring Hut, a small 3sided building with a picnic table and open fireplace in front. Walk down and explore this structure. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s as one of a series of shelters for people who were hiking along the Appalachian Trail. This shelter is now maintained by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club for overnight stays by backpacking hikers. The spring (known as Gravelley Spring in the past) is for the backpackers to obtain water and, a short distance away, there is a privy. Many of the hundreds of long-distance hikers who walk from Georgia to Maine along the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail each year walk down from the
trail for an overnight stay at Gravel Springs Hut during May, June, and July. Following Bluff Trail
Walk back to the spring and continue straight for about 65' to a fourth concrete post. Take the narrow walking trail to the right of the post.
