Cannon’s major departure from Rappahannock County was during World War El when he served with the US Army.

Curiously, Cannon celebrated his 28th birthday, April 28, 1944, on the coast of England as part of Exercise Tiger, a top-secret practice for the DDay invasion to follow. Eight Navy LSTs carried troops who were to assault the coast of England. As they made their way through the icy waters of the English Channel, they were attacked by German torpedo boats. Two LSTs, 507 and 531 were sunk and LST 289 was damaged. President Eisenhower ordered that the tragedy be kept under wraps. Over 700 young men were lost.

Cannon was aboard 515 and survived but his recollections of that day are vivid.
