Rappahannock County High School’s softball team has Friday circled on its calendar.
That date is Rematch Day, and this time, Rappahannock County head coach Richie Burke hopes for a better outcome.
Friday afternoon, the Lady Panthers host Group A Bull Run District rival Manassas Park. Just two weeks ago, an infield error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Cougars to score a run and win, 2-1, in extra innings.
Many district personnel believe that Rappahannock, Madison and Manassas Park will battle for the championship and right to advance to the Region B tournament later this spring.
With recent losses to Manassas Park and a surprising Clarke County squad, Burke knows that Friday’s rematch with the Cougars could have a huge bearing on the district standings.
“We must split with Manassas Park,” he said. “We have to be really focused. It's time to be smart and think about what we are doing.”
The rematch also features an outstanding pitching duel, with Rappahannock’s Rebecca Tupper and Manassas Park’s Courtney Steele. The pair combined to allow just eight hits and strike out 20 batters. Tupper had a no-hitter for
