Now, picture it made of a delicious fungus, and hidden in the woods every year from late April to mid June. Depending on your knowledge of anatomy, this inner vision should now resemble a morel mushroom, the perennial Rappahannock delicacy also known as a ‘merkle’.

Prized for their taste and the difficulty of finding them, these wild mushrooms are the focus of fungi enthusiasts, gourmands, several webpages, and the Smokehouse Winery Morel Mushroom Festival.
