The game of Bingo has its roots in Italy in the mid 1500s when it started as a form of lottery.
By the time it arrived in the United States in the early 1920s, it was known as ‘beano’ and involved taking coins out of cigar boxes.
Now, Bingo is played nationwide by young and old and is a particular favorite at the Amissville Fire Hall every Monday evening where players sit around round tables hoping that their card or cards has the winning series of numbers.
This past Saturday was no exception but had an added incentive for regular and new players - Longaberger Baskets.
Doors opened at 5 p.m. and by 6 p.m. bingo started. Admission was $20 in advance and $25 at the door. There were 20 regular games and five Jackpot games at $5 each. Only registered bingo players were eligible for the raffles.
