Susan Catherine Clark, married George Washington Pullen, and they lived just down the road, on the other ’side of the Jordan River, on property now owned by Joel Tate. The chimneys are still there. One of their children was named Ida Bessie, perhaps in honor of Susan’s mother.
On Thursday, January 31, 1952, the Rappahannock News had, on the front page an article announcing the 50th wedding anniversary of William Strother Brady and Ida Bessie Pullen. The article read, in part: “A country newspaper published about this time 50 years ago would have carried an item something like this: “Mr. and Mrs. George Washington Pullen have announced the marriage Of their daughter, Ida Bessie, to William Strother Brady. The marriage took place January 29, J902, at the home of the bride’s parents in Clark Hollow, with the Rev. Mr. Clark, Methodist minister of Flint Hill, officiating.”
So, there you have it. It is Clark Hollow, and no better authority exists than the Rappahannock News, and the News says, that, as of January 1052, it was Clark Hollow. As far as many of us are concerned, it is still Clark Hollow and always will be Clark Hollow.
We have a lot of families by the name of Clark in Rappahannock County. I am of the opinion that we ought to restore Clark Hollow to its historically correct and rightful name, and change Bean Hollow Road to Clark Hollow Road.
There are enough people in Clark Hollow who agree with me, that I think we can collect the money to pay the county for the cost of changing the signs.
And, of course, there is more to it than that, but, darn it, fair is fair.
