ancinuuu. iw is me smallest entry since the race moved to Great Meadow in The Plains in 1985 after a half-century at the Broadview course near downtown Warrenton.
“The Gold Cup is a challenging course,” said VGC executive director Diane Jones of the disappointing entry. “It’s hard to say why there aren’t more entered this year. Different years you get different groups of horses. It’s hard to tell.”
Jones wondered if there might be too many choices for top timber runners, with the $50,000 Maryland Hunt Cup just one week before the Gold Cup and the $75,000 timber stake at Iroquois in Tennessee one week after.
“Timber horses are a little like jockeys,” Jones said. “There usually aren’t enough of either one.”
