adopted the fiscal year 2007 school budget of $11,732,992 at their May 1 meeting. This figure is almost five percent higher than last year’s budget, but was well received by the BOS, who praised School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell for cutting costs from the budget before presenting it to the BOS.
“He stole our thunder this year,” said Supervisor Roger Welch.
Although all the Supervisors seemed satisfied with the School Budget, Board members did ask questions about the amount of school money left over from the 2006 budget
According to Dr. Chappell, the Rappahannock County school system did not have as much leftover funds due to “greater than expected expenditures” associated with rising fuel costs. Also on Supervisor’s minds was the cost of football.
“I’m not opposed to athletics, but football seems to be costing us a lot of money,” said Welch. According to Welch, RCHS football was designed to pay for itself with ticket fees, but so far had not accomplished this. Dr. Chappell agreed to track the costs associated with RCHS football for the BOS, but pointed out that ticket sales “had not been excessive for an 0-10 team.” The 2007 School budget was adopted unanimously.
