Over the next few weeks, Rappahannock County High School head track and field coach Scott Stephens would like to see some positive numbers that could translate into school records.
The . 4x 100-meter relay team is seeking a new school record in its event. So is senior Samantha Brown in the high jump. And junior Josh Makela is nearly automatic for points in the 3,200-meter run.
“We need to get everyone healthy for districts,” said Stephens, after a small group of Rappahannock student-athletes competed in Saturday’s Wrangler Invitational in Luray. “With the boys’ 4X100, we might experiment a little.”
The team of Brooke Stokes, Irving Smith, Josh Makela and Chris Harris won its 4X100 heat Saturday, but finished sixth overall with a time of 49.18 seconds. Stokes was a fill-in for junior Jesse Palmer, who did not make the trip because of illness. Still, that time leaves the foursome about two seconds away from a school record in the event. Stephens plans to juggle the five runners to see what is the combination that will be needed to succeed in going for that record.
