Rappahannock News Staff Writer. - While speaking at a Community Forum on Sexual Predators, Attorney General Robert McDonnell said he’s confident that new laws will help combat violent crimes against children.
“I think this Oegislation) will allow children to be children without fear of being victimized by sexual predators,” McDonnell said. “I think it will save lives.”
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine signed the legislation last week, to take effect July I.
The new laws will permit tougher sentencing of violent sex offenders; better management of the sex offender registry; easier and more comprehensive tracking of sex offenders; and enhancements to the civil commitment process.
“The most important thing that these new laws do is address recidivism,” McDonnell noted. “Sex offenders are among the most dangerous and violent criminals. They have to be taken off the street"
