At their May 1 meeting, the Board of
Supervisors unanimously approved the 2007
school budget. Minutes later, they unanimously appointed Tom Taylor as interim supervisor for the Piedmont District. This board does almost everything unanimously, they work together well. Bryant Lee, Ron Frazier, Bob Anderson. They are all Rappahannock County fixtures, men who have lived in this singular place a long time and understand each other well. So is Tom Taylor. Taylor is a lifelong resident of Rappahannock County, a farmer, business owner and is well known to most Rapp denizens In all probability, he will slide seamlessly into his place on the Board. That will be good for Piedmont District.
But is this good for Rappahannock? In choosing Taylor, the board passed over two female candidates, Kim Estes Baader and Monira Rifaat. This was a chance for the board to give itself a dissenting voice, a devil’s advocate, a viewpoint outside their comfort zone.
