when he was young, his family prospered.
“There just weren’t any jobs to be hand,” opined Kitty. “Working on the farms and with the land was pretty much your only option.”
The Cannons have raised cattle, com and oats over the years with plenty of pasture for making hay.
Cannon was named to the Board of Directors in July 1962. He still has letters that he received from James W. Fletcher and W.D. Cannon (he thinks a distant relative) congratulating him on his appointment.
Cannon graduated from Spenyville High School in 1937.
“There were ten in our graduating class,” laughed Cannon, “six boys and four girls.” Of those ten, only three remain alive.
“Mary (TBannon, she’s 89, and lives in Warrenton,” said Cannon, “and Ann Boyd Williams lives in Alexandria. That’s it.”
The phone rang.
It was Cannon’s daughter Marge wishing him a happy birthday and wondering if he and Kitty would like to go out for dinner to celebrate his birthday.
‘‘No, I want to stay home,” said Cannon. “No restaurant food is as good as I’ll get here.”
“My mother named me Alphaeus but she never wanted me to be called ‘AT, reminisced Cannon. “She said it was a name from the Bible.”
