Jeanie McNear says the folks who matched the McNears with Maarit Nord thought the Finnish girl came from a small rural community similar to Sperryville. In fact, the exchange student lives in a city of some 25,000 people, just a few kilometers from Helsinki.

But the 18-year-old has been above all adaptable, according to her hostess. “She blooms where she’s planted,” says McNear. Maarit has been doing some riding, some down-hill skiing, a little aerobic dancing. She’s taking oil painting lessons from Helen Bridges.

She lives in a city apartment with no pets in Finland. Here she enjoys the McNears’ farmhouse nestled next to a mountain side. She has no younger sisters at home. Here she helps mother three little girls: 13year-old Jennifer, 11-yearold Susannah and six-yearold Laura. (There are three horses, three cats and two dogs.)
