15, students must decide whether they want to go to high school and gear up for the hardships. Secondary education isn’t automatic as it is for most youth in the states. It is also much harder to gain acceptance into the European universities. Students must pass a grueling six hour long test on the first or second try. They have to be really good to get into the university and then they have to study to stay. Maarit says.

Jeanie McNear says she has been interested in the student exchange program since she was in high school herself. As a teen she spent a year in England. And when she was growing up, her parents opened their home to a boy from Germany through American Field Service, another exchange program.
