‘Tazewell Unemployed Are Desperate" announced the headline in the February 3 Northern Virginia Daily.
That desperation was eased a little bit last week as 3,000 pounds of apples donated by Rappahannock orchardists were loaded into pick-up trucks bound for southwest Virginia and the jobless miners of Local 6025.
The “good neighbor” policy was the idea of Sylvia Kreitler, director of Rappahannock’s Department of Social Services. She read the Associated Press article in the Northern Virginia Daily that described the southwest Virginia coal miners as the forgotten working poor. Unemployment in Tazewell is officially 16.2 percent but many have been jobless so long they’ve exhausted their benefits and are no longer on the unemployment rolls, according to the article. “A lot of them have lost their homes. They’re just barely keeping their heads above water. And they’re ineligible for help or aid because they own a car or a small piece of land. It’s a desperate situation.
