Of the support for the jobless in Tazewell volunteered by Rappahannock orchardists, Snead said, “We just felt sorry for them. We see the news. We hear about these coal mining towns. It’s a real crisis situation for them.”
On Friday, Hubert Brewster, Curt Shrader, Robert Hayes, Harold Gillespie and Herman Gillespie from local 6025 rolled into the Rappahannock Cold Storage plant in Sperryville to load 3,000 pounds of red and golden delicious, stamens and winesaps on their trucks. Again and again, they thanked the Rappahannock folks for their generosity. “Don’t you ever go through Tazewell without stopping to see us!” The appreciative miners said as they waved goodbye and headed back to southwest Virginia with their cargo.
