when she gets back home her friends will ask about the discos and restaurants and be surprised to find that she spent her year abroad feeding the cows and making friends with a horse named Smoke. The part she’ll talk about most will probably be her art lessons with Helen Bridges. She started shortly after she arrived last summer and feels she’s making a lot of progress. “I always wanted to take painting, but I was so busy — or thought I was busy.”
She probably was too busy. At home, Maarit would be required to take at least seven or eight classes plus electives. Being enrolled in the “language line” (as opposed to the “math line”) Maarit must learn at least four foreign languages. She has studied Russian, French, Swedish and English.
At home she would be required to take notes in class just like a college student here. It would be her responsibility to review on her own for tests. “They might just say this book comes to test — and that’s it.”
